The Mob Arena is a wave-based cooperative minigame in which all players who join are put into an arena to fight against increasingly difficult mobs, which could be joined and started by players by using /ma j on the /mobarena subserver.
On Skyblock Classic, the Mob Arena was based on Version 0.98.1 of the "MobArena" Plugin by garbagemule and slipcor.[1][2]
History
Introduction
Mob arena was first introduced sometime around 2012. It stayed activated until around 2014-2015, where it was then disabled.
26 November, 2016
The Mob Arena was announced to be re-introduced to Skyblock Classic by CypriotMerkz[3].
5 January, 2020
The Mob Arena was disabled, assumedly due to the abundance of bugs, issues, duplication glitches[4] and lag that it caused.
Staff still rarely re-enable it for brief periods to host games under supervision, this is to prevent players taking advantage of cheats or exploits while the Mob Arena is in operation.
This shutdown of mob arena was done silently without warning, and lasted for the length of about 5 years. This led to players creating jokes and other humorous predictions about the Mob Arena, such as the saying, "You will get married and have children before /ma j comes back".
6 February, 2025
Noobcrew announced the re-introduction of the Mob Arena within the coming few months, estimating that the update will arrive in late February, and if not in February then in the coming 2 months after[5].
The minigame at its core will not change, however the platform of which it operates and the rewards system does, being:
- The Mob Arena will be hosted on a seperate server instead of the same server, which was done in the past.
- The rewards system will change. Previously it would give the player random blocks, items and the final reward if the Mob Arena was completed. The new system would give players "Skyblock Gems" which could be redeemed on Skyblock Survival and Skyblock Economy, also including the SkyWars server in the future.
- The introduction of Skyblock Gems allows for players to redeem currency that they are given through the Mob Arena (or potentially through any future minigame added). Stated in the announcement, players can then redeem these gems for items or other cosmetics.
25 April, 2025
Mob arena returns on a separate subserver, accessed with /subserver. At release, there was no Gem Shop as promised, although an NPC could be found underneath the map for the shop, which was empty.
Gameplay
Upon the joining the Mob Arena, players are sent to a waiting room before the Arena starts.
Players would be forced to choose a kit and then hit or click an Iron Block in the waiting room to indicate that they are ready.
If players didn't choose a kit or hit or click an Iron Block before the countdown to the Arena start had concluded, they would be removed from the Mob Arena and any additional players who indicated that they were ready would start. If all players in the waiting room don't hit or click an Iron Block by the conclusion of the countdown, the Arena would simply not start.
Upon completion of the Mob Arena, providing there was adequate players and the Arena actually started, players would be teleported to the spectating area of the Arena. There, a leaderboard would provide the Wave the most effective 8 players reached, followed by the Mob Kills, Mob Damage, Damage Taken, Weapon Swings and Hits on Mobs throughout the duration of the last Arena. This was sorted by the highest in the aforementioned order (ie, if someone had the same amount of Mob Kills as another player that died during the same wave, then it would descend in order of total Mob Damage).
Mob Behaviour
Some mobs behave differently to Vanilla Minecraft in the Mob Arena.
Some changes, whether intentional or not, are:
- Zombie Pigman/Piglins
Zombie Pigman and Piglins will always move at a walking pace until it has been hit, even though they are aggrevated.
- Slimes
Slimes will not split and reproduce upon death.
- Skeletons
Skeletons will not slowly move around when preparing to fire an arrow. They will however follow the player around if they get too far.
- Blazes
Blazes will not move in any direction unless it is to follow the player. They can however still go up or down.
Bugs
On Skyblock Classic, Splash Potions do not work.
Countless reports of duplication glitches exist for the Mob Arena on Skyblock Survival. This is (assumedly) the reason why it is being moved to a seperate server.
Often-times mobs spawn on-top of players, causing immediate damage upon the start of the round. This is not so game-breaking as a bug as it can be avoided, but it is something to be weary of, try to stand in the middle of the arena upon round start.
Items could be smuggled into the Mob Arena during operation. This was done by having a seperate player phasing through the Arena and dropping players items that could provide an advantage. This was fixed on Skyblock Survival with the implementation of an Anti-Cheat, however is still possible on Skyblock Classic.
Items could be smuggled out of the Mob Arena before the Arena started. This was done by phasing out of the Mob Arena with a kit, and putting those kit items in an enderchest on a nearby island by flying to it. This was also patched on Skyblock Survival with the implementation of an Anti-Cheat. It is not possible on Skyblock Classic.
Special Rounds
Swarm
Swarm Rounds are rounds dedicated to a large number of a single mob. During this round, all mobs are extremely low health, and can be 1-hit killed with any weapon. Mobs that usually spawn on this round are Spiders and Slimes.
Special
Special Rounds are simply just a smaller number of quite powerful mobs. The mob's health are dependant on how many players there are and what round it is, so in late rounds with a lot of players, some mobs have considerably more health than usual.
Boss
Boss Rounds consist of 1 Mob with a large pool of health and special abilities. Some of these abilities include, but are not limited to,
- Fire Aura
Sets anyone in close proximity to the boss on fire.
- Shoot Arrow
Fires an arrow at the nearest player.
- Root Target
Prevents the target player from moving or looking around.
