Everyone has once had the glorious memory of this happening:

Types of Cobblestone Generators
Due to there being many, many, many different variations of the Cobblestone Generator, we're only going to go over a few of them.
The basic Cobblestone Generator
First, start off by digging 2 holes, as outlined. One hole should be an upside-down L shape, while the other one is just a singular 1x1 hole.
Secondly, put your water in the large hole FIRST, as if you place the lava first it can flow down to where the water is supposed to go and cause complications.
Finally, put your lava in the other side on the shallow hole, and break the block in between if you have any.
Bam! Easy, right?
